Is that you looking for all the world as if you have just given the golden apple to Aphrodite and are already regretting the decision?

Hera, Athena and Aphrodite are at odds. Who is the greatest? Unable to decide among themselves (the male gods knowing better than to get involved), the three divine ones decide to ask an unbiased mortal. Everyone likes a good competition and, since being the greatest of goddesses is not, in itself, much of a prize, a golden apple is made trophy.
The apple is given to young Paris, who is found sitting under a tree, watching the sheep, as befits a Trojan prince. The Judgement of Paris ensues. Of course, it is really Paris who is being judged, and with him all humanity. What do we consider most important? Piety, wisdom or love? Paris gives the golden apple to Aphrodite because he is, after all, an adolescent. Hera and Athena go off in a huff, and Aphrodite rewards Paris with the love of Helen, thereby starting World War One (in the Hellenic reckoning). Thousands of people die, an entire civilisation is destroyed, a great city is burned to the ground, and women and children are sold into slavery. All of which just goes to show how fickle is this thing called love.John Hudson
